Inspired by Color Blocking

One of my favorite trends in fashion this year is the come back of color blocking. This bold and contemporary use of blocks of unusual blends of color is very eye catching. For this design I decided to incorporated a geo type patterns and soften the look by accessorizing it with a magnolia sugar flower.

Coral and Orange Chevron

coral and orange chevron wedding decor and color ideas, photos by Tyler James Photography

Today we have dreamy peach and coral with chevron inspiration shoot designed by wedding planner and designer Crystal Adair-Benning of Distinct Occasions and photographed by the talented  Tyler James Photography. For the design of the cake I created a hand painted chevron cake with sparkly gumpaste flowers of shades of silver, coral, peach, and orange. I love how gorgeous this whole look came togather.

Gold Picture Frame Wedding Cake

I’d love to say it’s all smiles when designing one of a kind cakes but I can be very hard on myself sometimes when making a wedding cake. The artistic battle in my head is challenging me to create the best possible design that’s uniquely fit to the couple. Taking that dreamed up sketch of a concept that I haven’t done before and making it in a 3d decadent cake without missing one element can be a challenge but it’s so worth it when seeing the results. What I’ve found works best for me as a designer is being allowed the creative freedom to tweak the cake with the goal being to make it the ultimate wedding cake for the couple.

This cake had a few tweaks. The major one being I added the multi mini frames as the borders, thinking it would be cute for the talented photographer/bride. The sugar flowers inspired by the floral designs of Sweet Woodruff . I also felt the cake required an additional tier to best balance the decorative features of the flowers, crown topper and frame border so it went from three tiers  to four. I think my favorite part about this cake is the colors and seeing it fit perfectly with the decor of the wedding at Arcadian Court.

Grace's White Wedding Cake -Featured in Wedluxe

Last year I designed a cake for Grace and Ryan’s Ritz Carlton wedding. Inspiration for the cake came from Grace’s Romona Keveza couture gown that had hundreds of fabric petals with crystals adorned on the dress. Hundreds of sugar petals and silver dragees were applied to create the look of the creme brulee flavored wedding cake.  This wedding is featured in the current issue of Wedluxe Magazine and you can see the rest of this gorgeous wedding online  here

A spoon full of sugar….

I’m so happy it’s wedding season at last! I’ve been planning with lovely 2012 couples on the cake designs and now it’s time to unveil the collection over the next few months. Last weekend I created a whimsical Mary Poppins themed cake for Racheal’s Banana Split  bridal shower. So I incorporated the pin stripes from the attire worn , umbrellas and of course  spoons full of sugar. Since this was an adult event I wanted the theme to come of subtle and not too novelty. Enjoy!

I love how water color is making a big impact on textiles in fashion right now. I couldn’t help but be inspired by it for this banana birthday cake adorned with sugar flowers. So cute!

Dubai Wedding Cake with Carousel Girls

Looking back to when I first started cake decorating, I would never have imagined or dreamed that I would be in demand to design cakes and teach  internationally. I still can’t process how my work have grown so much in popularity but I am so very grateful or it. In mid May I designed and created another sugary masterpiece for a wedding produced by the ridiculously talented Carousel Girls.  Leena and Zainab of Carousel Girls really know how to go above and beyond for their couples and I’m always excited to help execute their vision with the wedding cake.

This 11 tier cake with 4 double height tiers consisted of : 2 trips to Dubai (13 hour flight each way), over 400 sugar flowers, several grams of 24 K gold and over 65 pounds of fondant. Thank you to both Sweet Stuff and the pastry kitchen  at the Raffles Hotel for welcoming me into their kitchens to create the towering cake.

Sweet Regards – L

Purple Peony Wedding Cake and Cupcake Favours

Peonies are one of my favorite spring flowers and look gorgeous on wedding cakes and in this case cupcakes. Dragon and Samantha said their vows at the Old Mill in Toronto. For their cake we designed a five tier cake with traditional elements like piped lace and sugar flower topper with anemones and peonies. The beaded ivory belt matched the brides gowns. For wedding favors for the guests I designed these purple peony cupcakes. Congrats to Samantha and Dragon!

Winter Bloom Dubai Wedding

As I mentioned before, back in December I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Dubai, UAE to create a wedding cake. I worked with the talented and kind ladies behind one of Dubai’s top wedding planning company, Carousel of Life . I also had the pleasure of teaming up with the fabulous cupcake bakery, Sweet Stuff Dubai  , who welcomed me into their bakery and assisted in the production of this wedding cake. I’m happy to finally reveal the cake  I travelled half way around the world for. For the design we had rich colors to work with , Orange, red and gold. The ladies at Carousel were so accommodating when I came to Dubai and even took me to the florist’s shop to see what was in store for the centerpieces. I tried my best to match the rich bright hues of the flowers in sugar and also created manzanita branches in sugar with a pair of sugar love birds. When delivering the cake to the outdoor reception, I knew I had done my job right because the cake fit beautifully with enchanting decor.

Filmtography did a great job documenting the wedding in both cinema and photography. I rarely get to see the couple enjoy the wedding cake so this was treat. 🙂

Urban Sweet Table with Montreal's Principal Planner.

Wow 2012 has already been shaping up as another year of new opportunities. I thought it would die down for a bit to process 2011 but this year is keeping me on my feet. This is partially why I’ve been getting behind on blogging but I hope to be back in the routine soon. I’m very grateful that my job allows me to travel and be creative with other industry rock stars or even that I get to teach in other countries and meet other passionate cakers (stay tuned for class updates) . It simply inspires me to be surrounded by driven people like myself. If you remember the Laduree inspired sweet table with Montreal’s  talented Azar from Principal planner and Monique Simone Photography, well while I was in Montreal I actually designed cakes for another stunning sweet table. Azar is not only an amazing planner, she also started up Montreal’s first cake stand rental / sweet table stylist company, Principal Planner Rents . I created a trio of cakes with lattice  and spray painted patterns with rich green, blue and silver sugar flowers for this sweet table. I am in love with how this sweet table turned out and I think the painted backdrop is to die for.

Laduree Inspired Sweet Table with Principal Planner

I’m really lucky to have found what I love to do as a cake designer, and even luckier to meet extremely talented people in this industry who have the same passion in creating beauty for wonderful couples. What drives me is pushing my creativity and making couples surprised and happy in their wedding cake. So when Azar from Montreal’s leading wedding planning company, Principal Planner Events  , (yes, you MUST check her work out …breathtaking!)  and the uber talent Monique Simone Photography asked me to create a wedding cake design for a “Laduree Inspired” sweet table, I couldn’t say no to work with such passionate and creative wedding vendors. This is a terrific example about how wedding vendors are very much a team when working together in a wedding and when we are all focused in exceeding couple’s expectation the result is perfection. There are so many beautiful little details Azar styled in this dessert table that I’m just going to let the lovely photos speak for itself. Make sure to check out the team that came together for this shoot (that btw was recently featured on the Amy Atlas blog).

Sweet Regards – L

"Too Cute" Cakes: Featured in Weddingbells Magazine

I’m going through a stage where I’m obsessed with all things cutesy and pretty. I’m even loving pink, glitter, and even started taking ballet lessons. This is coming from a past tomboy who wore overalls and plaid  (usually covered in mud). I guess you can my style has evolved and the little princess in me likes to come out when I  least suspected it. So when Weddingbells Magazine asked me to do a very “Cute + Playful” cake adorned with multiple shades of pastels, I couldn’t resist having fun with this cake.

For the design I was inspired by letterpress (thank you to the talented Deb from Palettera for lending me the templates for embossing and then painting), and felt flowers flowers (made in sugar paste of course.) When you put all these pastels together with a golden heart in a design,  you can’t help but think of the sweetness of  young hearts.

Sweet Regards – L

Weddingbells Magazine is now on stands nationwide. Look out for Part 2 & 3  next week to see two other cakes I designed that were featured in the Magazine.

Carried away in feathers {Owl Inspired Wedding Shoot}

Today I have a treat for you all! Back in the early  fall my dear friend (who is also one of the most talented and sweetest people I know),  Elizabeth Kaye asked me if I could create an owl inspired cake for a outdoor rustic shoot. I was immediately  inspired thinking about the multicolored  feathers that Owls have and with Fall being my favorite season I could wait to have her shoot my cakes in such a beautiful season.

I also got to work with wedding stylist and coordinator Lynzie Kent for Electric Blonde Entertainment and Events . She gave a very fresh and fun approach to styling this shoot and I’m so happy I was apart of this rock-star team. The shoot also  included gorgeous vintage inspired gowns from the fashion designer  Sarah Houston. Check it out and I would love to hear your feedback or even leave some love. 🙂

{Inspired} by Ruffles

I’ve had a design relationship with ruffles for half of my life now, starting with my obsession of fabric before cake. It’s funny about  four years ago I was practically begging couples to trust me and design a ruffle wedding cake and now there’s a cake ruffle craze. Here’s a few of my favorite ruffle wedding cakes over the years I wanted to share.

Color Inspiration: Deep Purple Wedding Cakes

Whether you call it aubergine, plum , eggplant, or just dark purple , these shades have found their way into elegant affairs. Some would say it has been used royally as the focal color with metallics like gold being the accent and in other ways the neutral when paired with a vibrant color like lime green or fuscia . Either way  you can’t turn your head to deep purple orchids, roses, and even cala lilies in any decorated party. Here are a few cakes I designed in the past few years with lush shades of dark purple.

Inspired by Color: Coral Wedding Cakes

Color plays a huge role when it comes to designing the wedding cake, let alone setting the tone to the entire event. I want to share some color “cake flashbacks” to show different ways we have brought a color to the sweet life (pun intended.) First up, Coral. There’s something very happy and elegant about coral in which  I love to design custom works with. When is comes to flower choices coral peonies are stunningHere are a two of my favorite coral wedding cakes. Enjoy!

Brush Embroidered Cake – Class Cake

This past year I’ve been very fortunate to teach some lovely classes. I’ve been flown to New York for a private class here and there and also been going to Montreal for private group classes. I really love mentoring some of the most passionate cake decorators I’ve ever met. I also teach a regular Haute couture class at the reputable Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts.  Here’s a two tier design I did for a class in Montreal discussing brush embroidery painted with watermelon pink and gold accented with pearls. For updates on class dates be sure to follow The Caketress Facebook Page for updates.

Wonderfully White Wedding Cake

I just had to blog this five tier white wedding cake. The lovely couple said their I do’s in a beautiful art deco movie theatre turned venue, The Eglinton Grand  in Toronto. For the design we did pearl painted and embossed tiers with ruffle trim and fantasy fashion flowers. It’s funny when I first started decorating cakes I was obsessed with vibrant colors and now I find myself appreciating the subtleness of soft and simple palettes. Enjoy and don’t be afraid to share your thoughts below.
